How to Prep Your Boat for a Flooring Install: A Pre-Appointment Checklist

Two Weeks Out: What to Actually Do Right Now

Call it done when the boat is empty, the fuel and batteries are handled, and you know your drop-off day. That's the whole job. Owners overthink this appointment more than any other part of the process, and the truth is prep takes an afternoon, not a week.

We install at our Tampa shop, hand-troweling the rubber in over one to two days with about three days of cure time after. The boat needs to sit still and empty during that window. Everything below exists to make sure that window doesn't stretch into an extra day because someone forgot a fishbox full of tackle.

Strip the Deck Completely

Anything not bolted to the hull needs to come off before the boat rolls into our bay. That means:

• Coolers, tackle bags, dive gear, life jackets, dock lines
• Seat cushions and any removable bolsters
• Rugs, mats, or existing SeaDek panels you're not keeping
• Floor drain plugs, bilge covers, hatch inserts if they lift out
• Loose electronics, handheld VHF, portable fish finders, phone mounts

Electronics: Disconnect, Don't Just Unplug

Hardwired electronics, livewell pumps, transom-mounted transducers, wired stereo systems, don't need to be pulled off the boat, but they do need to be disconnected or covered if they're anywhere near the work area. Our installers work around fixed hardware constantly, but a $2,000 chartplotter sitting exposed on a console while rubber gets troweled six inches away is a risk nobody needs to take. Wrap it, cover it, or pull it. Your call.

Fuel and Battery: Don't Show Up Full or Hot

A few things we ask every owner, every time:

• Fuel level: doesn't need to be empty, but don't top off right before drop-off. Less fuel onboard means less weight and less smell in an enclosed shop.
• Battery switch: shut it off. No bilge pumps cycling, no livewell timers running while the boat sits for three-plus days.
• Battery disconnect for older boats: if your battery is original to the boat or you've had any electrical gremlins, disconnect the terminals entirely. We'd rather you over-prepare here than have a dead battery surprise you at pickup.

Drop-Off Logistics at the Tampa Shop

Standard installs happen at our shop, not at the ramp, not in your driveway. If you've got a trailer, you tow it in yourself and we'll walk the deck with you before you leave. If your boat lives in the water, a slip at Maximo, Harborage at Bayboro, Salt Creek, or anywhere around Boca Ciega Bay, or you simply don't have a trailer, we'll meet you at the ramp with our own trailer and haul it in and back out. Demens Landing, Coffee Pot Bayou, Maximo Park, we've hauled out of all of them.

Tell us at scheduling which situation applies. It changes nothing about price, but it changes what time you need to be there and whether you're driving or just handing off keys.

One exception worth knowing: boats too large for a standard trailer haul can sometimes get a mobile, on-site install for an added fee, but that's not something we offer during summer months, and it's the exception, not the plan. Assume shop drop-off unless we've told you otherwise.

Small Things Owners Forget That Cost a Day

Every one of these has, at some point, turned a two-day install into a three-day install:

1. Fishing rod holders full of rods. They need to come out of rocket launchers and gunwale holders, not just be laid flat on deck.
2. T-top electronics boxes left unlocked. If it's not locked down, it needs to be removed.
3. Cushions left "just in the cabin." Cabin counts as deck space if the cushions are loose and in the way of guys moving around the boat.
4. No spare key for locking hatches that sit over deck areas we need access to.
5. Forgetting to mention a logo or lettering request. If you want something troweled into the floor, a hull number, initials, a shop or team logo, that has to be discussed and approved before install day, not decided when you drop the boat off.

None of these are complicated. They're just easy to forget when you're juggling a two-week-out appointment against work, weather, and everything else going on.
