Boats on the Georgia coast work brown water, oyster mud and heat, and they come back to the dock dirty. Georgia carries the biggest tidal swing anywhere below the Bay of Fundy, seven to nine feet twice a day, so a hull that floated clean at noon is sitting in marsh silt by dusk. Snap-in carpet holds that silt. Foam panels trap it under the edges and lift once summer heat works beneath them. Deck Armor is troweled on as one bonded rubber surface with no seam to lift and nowhere for the mud to hide, and it grips wet, dry or fully submerged.

Bryan, Liberty, McIntosh and Glynn

The Golden Isles run from the Ogeechee down through the Altamaha delta to Jekyll, and the boats that fish them are bay boats, center consoles and flats skiffs sharing the same water as the shrimp trawlers working out of Darien and Brunswick. Aric and Randy Clements are the operators for this stretch. They cover Bryan County around Richmond Hill, Liberty around Hinesville and Midway, McIntosh around Darien and Sapelo, and Glynn around Brunswick, St Simons, Sea Island and Jekyll. They work from a shop in Glennville, roughly an hour inland and about central to the four. Redfish in the spartina at high tide, tripletail on the buoys through summer, and a long run offshore when the weather allows it. Boats here spend their lives between marsh grass, oyster rake and sun, which is a harder life than a floor built for a lake ever meets.

St. Simons Sound, St. Andrew Sound, the Turtle and Mackay rivers, Hampton River and the creeks behind Sapelo and Darien all move hard twice a day. That means brown water, oyster mud and shell coming aboard on every trip, and a boat that runs skinny at low water and open sound at high. North into Bryan and Liberty it is the Ogeechee and the Medway with the same pattern. Heat does the rest: a dark deck in a Georgia August is not something anyone stands on barefoot. Bay boats, center consoles and flats skiffs share the water with dock boats that stay in the creeks.
