A flats boat lives with wet feet. The casting deck is where the day is won, and a foam pad that has started to chalk is the fastest way to end up on your back in front of a paying client. Deck Armor grips wet, dry or fully submerged, and it is troweled on as one bonded surface instead of being glued down in sheets that lift at the corners. Manatees, scallopers and tarpon guides share the same handful of springs and creeks up here, so the ramps stay busy and the boats work for a living.

Crystal River, Homosassa and the flats

The Nature Coast is skinny water, and the boats that run it are skiffs, bay boats and guide rigs that go out most days of the week. Scallop season fills them with wet feet and sandy shoes, and a deck you cannot simply hose off is a deck you fight all summer. Ian works with the captains and guides running these flats, so he knows what a working deck takes here before he mixes a color. This is spring fed water, clear and shallow, which is why the boats that live on it are shallow too. A poling skiff carries its owner standing up for most of the day, so the deck is not decoration here, it is the working surface. The springs run from Chassahowitzka up through Homosassa and Ozello to Crystal River, and the same skiffs work all of it.

The water Ian works

The Nature Coast is spring water meeting the Gulf, and almost none of it is deep. Kings Bay and the Crystal River run clear and shallow over rock and grass. The Homosassa and the Chassahowitzka are tighter and darker, with oyster and limestone waiting for a lower unit. Out at Ozello and Yankeetown the flats go on for miles, and south of Cedar Key it is the same story. Boats that live here are skiffs, bay boats and guide rigs, and they are on the water most days rather than most weekends. Scallop season is the hardest single stretch a deck sees all year: wet feet coming over the gunwale every few minutes, shell grit tracked in, and a cooler of ice sweating on the casting platform from morning to afternoon. A pad that has started to chalk turns that into a fall hazard in front of paying customers.
